What to do with the rest of the day's afternoon...

11.30.2004
So I'm home. I'm feeling a bit sick because I feel another cold coming upon, so now is probably as good a time as any to catch up on my blog.

I flew down south last Tuesday night to my mum's place for Thanksgiving. I had warned her before hand that she might be surprised when she saw me because I have lost a lot of weight. Well my mum was more than surprised because she didn't even recognize me when she came to pick me up at the airport. It took her a few moments to realize that I was her son. hehe. In fact, old neighbors, my grandma, and my aunt all said I looked completely different due to my weightloss. However this did not stop the occassional cheek pinch by my mum or grandma.

On Wednesday my mum and I went out to the local mall to do some shopping. My mum needed to pick up some chocolate from See's as a Christmas present for one of my aunts in the Phillipines. I ended up buying a pair of dark blue levi jeans from JC Penny. They were on sale for $25. I love Levi's 569s. I don't think I'll ever buy a different pair of jeans again. Well maybe that's an exaggeration, but I do love the loose fit, straight leg fit of the 569. We then went to this place off the 15 called Corona Crossings. My mum had heard from one of her professors about a movie theater there, so we decided we would watch a movie. Since neither of us could decide on a movie we both liked, we chose different movies. My mum picked Bridget Jonees 2, and I watched Sideways. I can't believe how good Sideways is. Paul Giamatti should earn an Oscar for his performance. I'm going to see it again with Jon this Wednesday. OOOH! They're opening a Chic-Fil-A at the Corona Crossing! When I come back down for Christmas, that's the first place I'm hitting up!

Thursday, I woke up at around 8am to smell of something my mum was cooking. She had made this awesome focaccia bread stuffing. It had chestnuts, carrots, celery, and spam. The original recipe had actually asked for pancetta, but since my mum couldn't find any she substituted spam instead. It came out great! Since my mum doesn't like turkey she instead bought a brisket for us to eat. It was nearly done by the time I made it down to the kitchen. I helped finished off the cooking for the beef and then started on the gravy and mashed potatoes. My mum meanwhile started making some green beans. Everything came together right in time for lunch. It was a great Thanksgiving lunch. My mum and I stuffed ourselves. I had this great wine my mum had in her liquor cabinet. I think I had about 3/4 of the bottle. After we cleaned up I headed to the couch to watch some TV. I ended up watching a Transformers marathon, but fell asleep half way through. Must have been that wine. By the time I woke up it was actually time for us to go to my grandma's place in Long Beach for dinner.

I was actually my mum's chauffeur for holiday as I ended up driving both of us everywhere. I actually didn't mind it, but I have to say that SoCal drivers have an awful time driving anywhere near the speed limit. I don't think I encountered one car that was driving faster 60 mph. My mum and I get to my Grandma's place around 6. My aunt's husband got a free 20lb turkey from work and cooked it for Thanksgiving dinner. I don't think I've seen a bigger mound of cooked meat before. I was assigned the task of carving the turkey, which I enjoyed quite oddly. After everything was carved me, my grandma, my aunt, my mum, and 3 of my cousins sat down to enjoy a nice thanksgiving feast.

I love being around family for the holidays. Growing up in England I didn't have any family except my mum and my dad, so every holiday would be spent with them. I don't know what it is, but having family around for the holidays is great. The first time I went to the Phillipines was around Christmas time. Every year my mum's side of the family has this huge reunion where everyone gets together to eat, drink, and be merry. I thought it was the most awesome thing ever. I never knew I had so many relatives. I spent the entire time at the reunion talking to a couple I had never met before. Now I was about 6 at the time, so talking to strangers was a bit odd for me. Yet I felt so comfortable talking to this couple about my life and everything. I think I spent a couple of hours talking with them and didn't want to leave when my mum and dad wanted to go. It's great to have that feeling of familiarity.

Back to Thanksgiving. After dinner we all just sat around for a bit watching TV and talking a bit. We actually talked to one of my aunts in the Phillipines for a bit. My mum and I left not soon thereafter. I drove us home and we went to bed to prepare for Friday...

The Friday after Thanksgiving is nicknamed Black Friday because this is the day that most retailers come out of the red and into the profit zone since it's the busiest shopping day of the year. Retailers have specials and discounts all set up for this day. Well being that I'm frugal(read cheap), I decided that I would go and see what this was all about. My mum woke me up around 5:30. I got dressed and stuff and we were out the door by 5:45. Our first stop was Best Buy...hehe...I had noticed a number things on sale there that I wanted to get. When we got there the line stretched around Best Buy to the back parking lot. There must have been at 200 people in line already. I thought this quite amazing because it was not even 6 in the morning and it was freezing too! They let us in at 6 and the frenzy began. I don't think I've seen so many people in one store before, ever. I already knew what I wanted so I headed over to the music section and picked up the following CDs:

U2: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
Tenacious D: Self Titled
Sublime: The Best of Sublime
Michael Jackson: Thriller(Special Edition)
Modest Mouse: The Moon & Antartica

I also picked up The Chappelle Show Season I DVD as gift for a friend. I ended up paying $48 for everything. My mum, bought Shrek 2, Harry Potter 3, a portable DVD player, a compilation CD, and two video games. After waiting in line for a half-hour to pay. We went across the street to Norms for breakfast. Next on our agenda was a place called Cabazon. There's a huge outlet mall there with 130 stores. It took us about 45 minutes to get there and another 20 to park. I could not believe how crowded it was there. There were no parking spots in the mall proper, so I ended up driving around the back of the mall and eventually found this parking spot in a construction zone. Some enterprising workers had decided to open up their little site for parking for a minimal fee of $5. In fact house owners around the area had opened up their yards as parking lots as well. We finally park and start walking around. I thought Best Buy was crowded, but this place was like Tokyo or something. Not only was it crowded like Tokyo, but all I could see was Asian people. My mum and myself included. What was odd was that certain stores would have queues of people outside waiting to get inside. Lacoste, Coach, Armani Exchange, were just a few of the stores that bargain thirsty shoppers chomping at the bit to get inside at buy designer clothing at low low prices. I don't get the thing with Asians and designer clothes. Well I ended up buying some black slacks, a jacket, and some shoes all for a decent price. Although it was only around 1pm my mum and I were both knackered from day already, so we decided to head back to Riverside for lunch.

We were originally going to eat at the Old Spaghetti Factory, but got there too late for lunch. We decided that we would eat dinner there and have lunch back at home. When we got back, the place was packed but we only waited about 20 minutes for a table. I got the spaghetti with meat sauce and sausage while my mum got the baked lasagna. I like her food better than mine. After dinner we called it a night.

I had been craving some Filipino food ever since I had arrived in SoCal, so my mum and I drove to Cerritos to a place called Pinoy Pinay for lunch on Saturday. They give you so much food for so little money. I think our entire meal cost under $15 with dessert and some extra stuff! I ate stuff that I had not eaten in a very long time. It felt good to eat. We went back to Riverside because I had to pack and get ready for my flight which was leaving that afternoon. We didn't much of anything else that day except lounge around. While I was getting ready to leave a small storm system had come into the area. This had me a bit worried because I was hoping my flight was not going to be delayed. My suspicions were correct because I arrived at the gate to find out that my flight had not even left its previous stop of Phoenix for Ontario because of weather problems there. My flight was delayed about an hour and a half consequently. The flight was nice albeit a bit bumpy from time to time, but nothing to big. All in all a quiet end to a great holiday. I'm looking forward to Christmas.

More tea related stuff

11.29.2004
I bought this tea tumbler from Whole Foods a couple of weeks ago that allows you to brew tea in this little cup. It's the most awesome thing ever. I'm all about extremes today.

I have a drink

As I mentioned somewhere before I have a Sunday ritual in which I go to Whole Foods and get a burrito. I also get a protein drink. On the same shelf as the protein drink is an orange juice, but there's a funny thing about this orange juice. It has my name in it, or rather my proper first name and last initial. I did a double take the first time I saw the label. I have to pick up a bottle one day.

Going karaoke tonight. I don't think I'm eating enough food in the day. I eat enough each meal so I'm full, but I'm still losing weight.

what gives me a headache? Debugging code. Oy. I've spent countless hours trying to debug some C/FORTRAN code. My eyes are crossed, and I think I'm starting to get cross myself.

I'd love to give a recap of last weekend's festivities, but I don't have the time right now. All in all though, I had a good time. One thing of note; I went to an oxygen bar. This is a place where you breathe pure oxygen. One of my friend's boyfriend is a manager at the Oxygen Bar up in the city. I endedup going there late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. I got the invigorating scent. It certainly woke me up. I'm definitely going to go back there when I have the opportunity. Great place.

If this were me in person and I knew you really well, then this is what you would get. Me talking incessantly.

Did I mention I can wear a small now? I hate to brag. I mean I really do, but that's just so freakin' cool. I hope I haven't typed this before because then it would seem like I'm bragging, which I really am not. I'm just happy. Okay. Don't look at me.

I really want to eat this piroshki. I think I'll wait until after I work out. Oh yeah. Reward system baby.

I think if I type too much on this blog, my brain will be totally devoid of thought. I suppose that would be a good time for meditation.

I have ADHD. G'night for now.

I might go to the city tonight! Whee!

I should proofread more often. I have some odd grammar and spelling mistakes. Oh well, I'm an engineer. A nobel laureate in writing isn't really required for my job.

Oooh. Yesterday as part of Toastmasters, I was Toastmaster of the day. Meaning I was the organizer of the whole meeting yesterday and also head of ceremonies. I surprisingly had a lot of fun and so did everyone else in the meeting. I really love being in front of people and being the center of attention, so being Toastmaster was just perfect for me. Everyone said I did a great job of interejecting humor every now and then to lighten the mood of the meeting. Now more than ever, it seems we need to have a little mental break once in a while in our meetings because of our current schedule. We're currently in the middle of our 4 week long Speechcraft seminar. The seminar is basically a Toastmaster bootcamp where we have five speechcraters give a speech each week. It's been a learning experience for all of us especially myself because I can see my weaknesses apparent in other people. I've really learned a lot from being in Toastmasters. I'd recommend it to anyone even if you're already a good public speaker.

I think having this blog has given me a case of mental diarrhea.

Fridays are good

I had another good game of basketball today. I played one on one with one of my coworkers. We played 3 games of "21" and a game to 11. I lost the first two games, but won the last two. On the last game I made my last 4 free throws, but these weren't normal free throws since we were shooting from the top of the key. We were both kind of surprised by me making 4 in a row. My shooting has become much better over the last few weeks. It feels like I can make a shot from almost anywhwere now. I just need to work on my dribbling and inside game a bit more, so I can be a well rounded player.

For lunch I had changed up my sandwich routine and had a grilled salmon sandwich as opposed to a ahi tuna sandwich. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. A very tasty sandwich. Piazza's, the place where I get my sandwiches, has some of the best prepared food. It's great having a little local grocery store like Piazza's.

Had fun playing poker last night. I got a little bored about 3/4 of the way through the night, so Scott and I started playing some darts. We played one more round, then I took Scott home and then myself. There was way too much food. I bought peanuts and a 5 lb. bag of hot wings from costco to eat, but then Brin brought a couple of frozen pizza, and Sue brought a whole bucket of KFC. The hot wings were great, and there plenty of peanuts left over for next week. Yay! I gorged myself. Gah. I know I should workout tonight but I just don't feel like it.

Okay, so I'm going to see that girl again this Monday night but there's a possibility of seeing her tomorrow. If all goes well I'll ask her out on one of those two occassions. Hopefully my nerves won't make me stumble over my words any more than they usually do. I really think she's a great girl, so I'd like to get to know her better.

I bought a piroshki along with my sandwich for lunch today. I haven't eat the piroshki yet. It looks good though. I wonder what it will taste like.

I like blogging. It helps me remember what I did.

For example.

Jay.

Yes?

Pay your bills.

Okay Jay.

Good.

You can have a cookie now.

Who me?

Wait which Jay is talking?

I don't know.

Ah forget it. Let's just share the cookie.

Okay.

I'm also quite shy and almost non-attentive around girls who I think are attractive. This tends to leave a somewhat bad impression of myself on others. A bit odd. I need to work on that too.

a little one

I'm very quiet with people who I am not familiar. It's very strange. I could go entire conversations without saying a word to anyone. Consequently when people meet me for the first time, they tend to think I am introverted, quiet, shy type as opposed to the person I am normally. I need to find a nice balance between the two first time encounters. I think alcohol helps.

The power of cheese

I got the best cheese from Whole Foods on Sunday. It's a double aged English dubliner cheddar. I can't believe how smooth and rich this cheese feels in my mouth. I've only actually put it on a tuna sandwich thus far plus I've eaten it plain. It just tastes so damn good. Go to Whole Foods now and get some! mmm...cheese.

There's something about...

I mentioned earlier that I'm growing my hair out a bit just to see what I can do. Consequently I've had to change my hairstyle somewhat to accomodate my evergrowing hair. Apparently some people think I look totally different. I'm not putting any stuff in my hair to spike it up or anything. I'm just letting it fall flat. One person told me I look like a kid. It'll be interesting to see how long I can get my hair before I become annoyed with it.

el fin de semana

So I've already got plans for this weekend. Thursday or Friday I'm probably going to play poke with some of my buddies again. Saturday is going to be a bit busy. I'll be headed up to the city to watch this movie:

Riding Giants

I'm going to be there with a bunch of friends plus a guy who helped out with the filming of the movie. After we're going to grab some pizza in North Beach and maybe some drinks afterwards. Once we're done with that business then we're going to a birthday party for a friend of a friend. They have a place that overlooks the bay on Treasure Island. Apparently it has an awesome view. Nothing planned for Sunday, but I hope to catch The Incredibles.

It rained earlier this morning, so the possibility for bball today is very slim. I'll be headed to the gym for lunch anyay. My chesticles hurt from working out the other day.

That's all I can remember for now.

There's something missing

Okay, so I had an absolutely awesome basketball game yesterday. I wasn't on a losing team the entire time we played. We had five players, so 3 on 2 was a necessity. For the first couple of games I was on the 3 man team. I hit a couple of good shots here and there, but with the help of my teammates we were able to closeout the first three games to 11 points pretty quickly. For the last two games I was on the 2 man team, and I just caught on fire. I'm a pretty good shooter, but it seemed like I couldn't miss. The other team even double-teamed me, and I still hit my shots. I got the game winning shots in both of the last matches. It felt sooooo great to win, especially being a man down. I was tired as hell after but it was worth it.

Oh and on Friday after the poker/drinking binge, as a sobriety test we each had to hit a bullseye before driving home. I hit 3 bulls in a row. How's that for sober? Of course if a cop had pulled me over, I don't think saying "I hit three bullseyes in a row" would be a good excuse.

I'm sure I'll remember to type something later.

Moebius

Where to begin? Hmmm...I had a great weekend. On Friday after work I headed to a buddy's place to play some poker. We first played some darts for a while and imbibed of the alcohol. A few more buddies showed up, so we got to playing some hold 'em for a few hours. We ended up playing until about 3am and drinking a whole bottle of scotch. I woke up Saturday with a partial hangover. Saturday was another friend's birthday, which we celebrated up at Cha Cha Cha's in the mission. Again alcohol was imbibed but of the sangria variety. Shortly after the birthday dinner we went to one bar which was kind of boring, so we ventured a few blocks down to a place called Blondies. We stayed there until around 12 or 1. I was DD that night, so we had a little adventure trying to figure out which of my passengers, one of which was the birthday girl, was okay to drive home. My roommate was with me, so he took birthday girl home. A fun night with great food and drinks.

I don't remember doing much on Sunday except going grocery shopping and doing some errands. Sunday was my lazy day. Oh, I did work out. *flexes* I think I've developed a Sunday routine since I now seem to eat a Whole Foods burrito every Sunday morning. I accompany this great meal with a protein shake. It's good food.

Yesterday I went up to Belmont to catch MNF with some other friends. Hung out with the hot girl last night. We played some game where you have to slide pucks down a salted table and see who gets the furthest without your puck falling off the table. We talked for a bit too. We might hangout again this Saturday because one of her cousins is performing at a night club in SJ. Oooh, I had some fish and chips plus a newcastle. We'll definitely be hanging out again next Monday for some more football though. Yay!

I've been trying to be more consistent in my workout schedule as of late. I've reached a self-imposed weight-loss plateau, so I'm trying to be disciplined in terms of working out everyday. Although beer and fish and chips doesn't seem to be helping me overcome my plateau. One thing I noticed this morning though. I have nice horseshoes developing in my tricep area. I am not obsessed with working out.

Nothing much going on today. Solving problems at work and such. Yesterday I solved world hunger but then I had lunch.

There are hundreds of thousands of things that you can eat that are not cheese

I used to not like cottage cheese. Now I can't get enough of it. Odd.

Face the music

I need to face up to the things that I'm afraid of or embarassed about. Often when I think about those situations or moments, I try to distract myself by making odd verbalizations or singing to myself. It's quite weird. I've been trying not to do it, but every so often I will. I really just need to do. I need to find a better paying job. I should call this girl that I like. Cliched as it may be, life is short. I'm content being comfortable in my little consistent niche, but it's time to break out. I don't know if I'll actually act upon what I've just typed, however knowing that I've actually admitted it is nice.

I feel sick. I don't know whether to shout or cry. I can only hope.

...

I just went through 3 or 4 blogs where I saw blatant abuse of ellipses(...). WTF.

*sizzle*

So I was steaming some vegetables last night but didn't realize I didn't put any water in my steamer. As a result my pot started to melt, however I didn't notice the melting pot until I looked at my food. I picked up my pot and it started dripping molten metal over the stove and hardwood floor. There are now a few burn marks on the floor and kitchen counter. I'm glad I wasn't burned myself though. Molten metal + skin = me screaming like a little girl. I mean taking it like a man.

I voted touchscreen!

It's not easy being cheesy.

One more thing!

I'm hungry, but what else is old?

More bits

I just realized I typed bits a lot in my last post. Well I typed bit twice, which seems like a lot. See now I typed a lot a lot.

I think I'm going to grow my hair out a bit. I am not a girl. I've had short hair for ages. I'm gonna go long baby.

Empire Strikes back is so damn good.

I need to grow some balls and call this one girl. I think she's really "cool". This was the friend's house I stayed at on Saturday night. She's, for lack of a better and more descriptive word, hot.

I went to Old Navy last week and got four pieces of clothing for less than $10. All clearance. I'm an Old Navy bitch.

Soon I will be strong enough to take over the world! Oooh one time I was at one of my old gyms and this guy started talking to me about weightlifting and whatnot. I was at my old gym to end my membership. I liked Gold's Gym much better. Anyway, this guy starts talking about how I'll be a famous bodybuilder and stuff, and how he'll see me on TV and everything. It was a bit of an odd conversation but it made me feel good...hehe. Apparently I'm going to be a famous bodybuilder. Look for my name in Muscle & Fitness. I'll be running for the Governorship of California come the next election.

VOTE!

I might take up Tai Chi or some other martial art. I'm debating.

Okay, I'm spent. For now.

Satisfaction

It's weird sometimes how much satisfaction I get from my job. I really enjoy problem solving and being an engineer(I'm a physicist at heart) allows me to free my mind a bit. All I need is a little bit more funding for having fun.

I had a really great weekend. I went to a Halloween party on Saturday up in Belmont. I went as a soccer hooligan. This was the perfect outfit because I didn't have to pay a thing for it. I have 5 or 6 soccer jerseys, plus a hat and scarf. I added a little facepaint and a wig and voila soccer hooligan. Everyone thought the wig was my real hair. Anyways I got drunk, ate lots of food, danced my ass off. All in all a great Saturday night. I drove home the next morning after staying the night at a friend's place. I was really sore. I don't know from what exactly though. I worked out on Saturday, so that explains my sore legs but not the incredibly sore neck. I got home around 9am and talked to my roommate for a while. He went down to Monterey with another roommate to another Halloween party. He went as a gay sailor. After breakfast we watched The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi DVDs. I was planning to go with yet another roommate to the Castro but ended up not going due to laziness. I like weekends.

Longest post by me ever.

I'm destined to complain forever

Heck I'm complaining about complaining. Anyway, my legs are incredibly sore from working out on Saturday. I did leg presses, leg extensions, and lunges. I can barely walk. I can't wait to work out at lunch today.
