My head is talking to me

A snorf is the demon offspring of a smurf and snork. If you ever see one in the wild, then you'd better run as it might be the last thing you'll ever see. If you're Steve Irwin however, just stand there.

The Nike half was hilly. It was very similar to the San Francisco half I did in July, but finished in a different place. I had a really good run despite running on really tired legs. The first couple of miles went slow because I was having to weave in and out of the crowd. I think I could have knocked off a couple of minutes from my finishing time if there weren't so many people running in front of me at the beginning. As always it took me about 3 miles to warm to where I could run at a relatively fast comfortable pace. A minor annoyance were the distance markers for miles 5 and 6 because they were completely off. I apparently ran mile 5 in around 10 minutes and mile 6 in about 5 minutes, which really threw me off. The hills weren't as bad I remembered when I ran back in July. I think was laboring a lot more the first time than I was on Sunday. Good old hill workouts actually paying off! I have this weird thing when I run. I really don't remember much of any run that I do. I have flashbacks and brief glimpses but that's about it.

The entire race I was trying to catch up to this one girl. I was using her as my pacer and eventually caught up to her at around mile 10. As I caught up to her, I said hi and ran with her briefly. I only ran with her for a bit because she kept on talking to herself for motivation. Every once in a while she'd yell out "oh yeah!" or "come on!" Sort of like Peggy Hill but much less hickish. Well I got really tired of that and started to pull away from this girl.

About a mile and a half out from the finish I ran into one of my Team In Training teammates who was supporting the race. He ran with me for a little and then let me go about two-tenths of a mile later. As we broke off he said "just around the corner and it's one mile to go." After hearing that, I dug deep inside and kicked in the auxillary engines. I don't know how fast I ran that last mile, but I was completely out of breath by the time I crossed the finish line. I actually came in about a half minutes behind another Team In Training person who finished first our age division. I actually passed him a couple of times during the race, but he eventually passed me.

Well after crossing the finish line, I caught my breath and walked over to the guys in tuxedos handing out the finsher's "medal." I wish they stuck with last year's design because that was a nice simple "26.2" or "13.1" trinket. This year the design is the sillohuette(sic?) of woman runner. Oh well. I didn't know this at the time, but people who placed in the age divisions also got an extra little dohickey. I'm really excited about that too?

Great race that I'd do again, if only to place higher next year ;)

Coming up an 18 miler and then another half marathon the week after at beautiful Big Sur.

Whee!

I'll have more to post later about post race festivities, but this'll do for now.
